Matching orders in one batch versus one by one
In an auction the orders gathered over a set period are matched at the single price where the most shares can change hands. In continuous trading, orders are paired off as they arrive through the session. The open and the close are set by auction.
An auction may settle 30,000 shares at $1,000 all at once.
