Open and close

The first and last prices of the trading day

In detail

The first price struck after trading starts is the open, and the last one of the day is the close. Orders pile into both moments, so prices jump and volume clusters there. Overnight news shows up at the open, and the day's verdict at the close.

Example

A stock closing at $1,000 can open at $1,080 on good news.
