The moment an order is matched and the trade is done
Execution is when your order meets a counterparty and the trade is completed. The price it fills at is the execution price; a limit order fills at your price or better. Placing an order is not owning the shares, only the fill is. In a thinly traded name an order can fill partly, leaving the rest waiting.
If only 600 shares of a 1,000-share buy order execute, the other 400 stay on the book.
