Year-over-year change (YoY)

How much a figure rose or fell against the same period a year earlier

In detail

Year-over-year compares a figure for a period with the same period one year earlier. Sales and profits have seasonal swings, so comparing with the same three months last year shows real change better than comparing with the three months just before. Rising sales and rising profits are often summed up as higher revenue and higher earnings.

Example

Sales of $10 billion in April to June against $8 billion a year earlier is a 25% increase year over year.
