Revenue

Everything the company took in from sales

In detail

Revenue is the total the company received for the goods and services it sells. It sits at the top of the income statement, and costs and expenses are subtracted from it step by step to produce each level of profit. It shows the scale of the business, but large revenue means nothing if expenses eat it.

Example

Revenue of 1,000 less cost of sales of 800 leaves gross profit of 200. Take out 180 of expenses and 20 remains.
