What was sold and what was left, over a period
An income statement lays out revenue, costs, and the profit remaining at each stage over a period. Starting from revenue it works down through gross profit, operating profit, ordinary profit, and net income. Seeing which step eats the most tells you whether the burden is cost of goods, running expenses, or interest.
Revenue of 1,000 narrows step by step โ 80 in operating profit, 75 in ordinary profit, and 50 left as net income.
