Guidance revision

A company changing its own forecast for the year

In detail

Some listed companies publish their own forecast for sales and profit at the start of the year. When results drift away from it, the company reissues the numbers: upward if raised, downward if cut. These land on any day, not just results day, so they move share prices sharply. The reason behind the revision matters as much as the number.

Example

Lifting the operating profit forecast from $10 billion to $12 billion is an upward revision.

Differences by country

Japan — In Japan most listed companies publish a full-year forecast in their earnings summary.

South Korea — Korea does not require companies to publish earnings forecasts. But a company that shares forecasts of sales or operating profit with analysts or institutions must first disclose them through the exchange (fair disclosure).
