Unemployment rate

The share of job seekers who have no job

In detail

The unemployment rate counts people who want work and are looking but have none. Anyone who has stopped looking drops out of the count, so the figure can improve while conditions are still poor. It is a lagging indicator: unemployment usually keeps worsening for a while after the economy itself has turned.

Example

3 people without work among 100 seeking it is a rate of 3%.
