The repeating swing between good and bad economies
Economies improve and worsen in turns: recovery, boom, slowdown, slump, then recovery again. That loop is the business cycle. Different sectors lead at different points, with carmakers and machinery rising in booms while food and utilities hold up better in slumps. Which phase you are in is usually only confirmed after the fact.
Peaks and troughs are usually dated officially afterwards, and one cycle can run about 4 to 5 years.
