Jobs report

How many people are working, and how many are not

In detail

A jobs report gathers the number of people employed and the unemployment rate. In the United States it lands on the first Friday of each month, and the payroll count outside farming draws the most attention. Working people earn and spend, so it is among the fastest reads on the economy. A very strong number can also mean higher rates, so good news is not automatically good for stocks.

Example

Payrolls coming in 200,000 above forecast is read as a strong number.
