Transaction tax

A tax on the trade itself, not on the profit

In detail

It is charged on the value of the trade whether or not you made money, so it is paid even on a losing sale and stacks up the more often you trade. Some countries levy it and others do not.

Example

A 0.2% transaction tax on a $1 million sale takes $2,000.

Differences by country

Japan — Japan has no securities transaction tax; it was abolished in 1999 and only gains are taxed.

South Korea — In Korea a securities transaction tax applies on sale: 0.05% on KOSPI plus a 0.15% rural levy, and 0.20% on KOSDAQ (as of 2026).
