Tax-free account

An account where gains are not taxed

In detail

Within a set allowance, what you buy in this account pays no tax on price gains or dividends. Governments offer it to encourage long-term saving, so the name and the size of the allowance differ by country. Anything beyond the allowance sits in an ordinary taxable account.

Example

A $2,000 gain taxed at 20% costs $400, but nothing inside a tax-free account.

Differences by country

Japan — In Japan this is NISA, with an annual allowance of 3.6 million yen and a lifetime cap of 18 million.

South Korea — In Korea this is the ISA: interest and dividends up to ₩2 million (₩4 million for lower-income, farming and fishing households) are tax-free, and the excess is taxed separately at 9% (as of 2026).
