NISA

A Japanese account where gains up to a limit go untaxed

In detail

NISA is a Japanese scheme where gains and dividends from stocks and funds bought inside the account are not taxed. Outside it, gains and dividends carry roughly 20% tax. There are annual and lifetime caps on how much you can put in, and you may hold only one account. The rules change with legislation, so check official sources for current limits.

Example

A gain of ¥100,000 in a taxable account loses about ¥20,000 to tax. Inside NISA you keep all 100,000.
