Dividend tax

Tax on the dividends you receive

In detail

When a company pays you a dividend, that amount can be taxed. In most countries it is deducted before you are paid, so what lands in the account is already net. The rate and the method can differ from those used for capital gains.

Example

A $10,000 dividend taxed at 20% leaves $8,000 in the account.

Differences by country

Japan — In Japan a listed-share dividend normally has 20.315% withheld at source (as of 2026).

South Korea — Korea withholds 15.4% on dividends (14% income tax plus 1.4% local tax). From 2026 through fiscal 2028, dividends from qualifying high-dividend companies can, on application at filing, be taxed separately at 14–30% instead of being added to other income (as of 2026).
