Tankan survey

Japan's central bank asking firms how business feels

In detail

The Tankan is the Bank of Japan's survey asking companies nationwide how business actually feels. Its core figure subtracts the share answering "poor" from the share answering "good", so a positive reading means more firms feel good than bad. Sentiment on the ground shows up before compiled statistics do, which makes it useful for spotting turning points.

Example

A reading of +10 means 10 points more firms answered good than answered poor.
