Nominal and real

Figures with inflation left in, and with it taken out

In detail

Nominal is the amount as it appears; real is what is left once price changes are stripped away. A 3% pay rise buys nothing more if prices also rose 3%. Any economic number means something different depending on which one is meant.

Example

Nominal growth of 3% with 2% inflation is about 1% in real terms.
