Consumer Price Index (CPI)

How much everyday prices moved from a year ago

In detail

CPI bundles the prices of things households buy often into one index. Comparing it with the same month a year earlier tells you how strong inflation is. Central banks raise and cut rates by watching this number, so stocks and currencies tend to move on release day. A core figure, stripping out volatile items like fresh food, is usually read alongside it.

Example

A CPI of 3% year on year means a $100 basket now costs about $103.
