Hard fork

A rule change that splits a chain into two

In detail

A hard fork happens when the base rules of a blockchain change and the chain splits between the new rules and the old. If participants disagree, both chains keep running and become separate crypto assets. New coins have been born this way. Exchanges often suspend deposits and withdrawals around a fork, and each handles it differently.

Example

After a split, someone holding 1 coin may end up with 1 on each chain.
