A catch-all name for crypto assets other than bitcoin
Altcoin is the umbrella name for crypto assets other than bitcoin. Some add a way to run contracts automatically, some aim at faster transfers; the purposes vary widely. Thousands are said to exist, but thinly traded ones swing hard in price and can be hard to sell when you want to. Registered exchanges list only a fraction of them.
More than 10,000 are said to exist worldwide, while a single exchange may list only a few dozen.
