Blockchain

A ledger whose records are chained together in time order

In detail

A blockchain stores transactions in bundles called blocks and links them in time order like a chain. Many participants keep the same copy, so altering part of it shows up immediately as a mismatch. Being able to keep records without a single administrator is what crypto assets are built on. Erasing an old record afterwards is, as a rule, not possible.

Example

Bitcoin adds one block roughly every 10 minutes, recording the transactions made in between.
