Free float

The share of a company's stock that actually trades

In detail

It is what is left after the shares held permanently by founders and business partners are taken out. When the float is small, even modest orders move the price a lot. Index providers also use it to decide how much weight a company gets.

Example

If 3 million of 10 million shares float freely, the float is 30%.
