Shares outstanding

The total number of shares a company has issued

In detail

It is every share the company has put into the world. Multiply the price by it and you get market value; divide profit by it and you get earnings per share. It grows with new issues and shrinks with buybacks, so the same profit can be worth more or less per share.

Example

Profit of $1 billion over 10 million shares is $100 per share.
