In detail

TOPIX is calculated by the Tokyo Stock Exchange from the combined market value of its constituents. Where the Nikkei 225 leans on high-priced stocks, TOPIX leans on large ones. It covers far more names, so it is generally treated as the better picture of the market as a whole.

Example

A company worth ¥10 trillion moves TOPIX roughly 100 times more than one worth ¥100 billion.
