DeFi handles lending and exchange through programs on a blockchain, with no bank or broker in the middle. It runs around the clock and anyone can use it, but there is also nobody to contact when something goes wrong. Funds have been drained by flaws in the code, and no scheme protects the assets you deposit.
A protocol may display a rate of 5% a year, but that is not a guarantee.
