Locking coins to help run the network and earn a reward
Staking means locking up coins for a period to take part in verifying the network, in return for a reward. Unlike mining, which competes on computing power, the role is assigned in proportion to what is staked. Staked coins are often locked, so you may be unable to sell while the price falls. The reward rate is not fixed and shifts as participation changes.
Staking for a year at 3% leaves you holding 103% of what you locked up.
