Closing trade

Shutting a position with the opposite order

In detail

You sell what you bought, or buy back what you sold, to return your exposure to zero. On margin and in futures the profit or loss only becomes real at this point. Dated contracts have to be closed by their deadline.

Example

Closing a position bought at $1,000 by selling at $1,100 locks in $100 a share.
