The thin lines marking the high and low of a candle
Wicks are the thin lines above and below a candle's body, marking the high and low reached in that period. A long upper wick says the price rose and was pushed back down; a long lower wick says the reverse. When the body is small and the wicks are long, buyers and sellers fought to a draw over that period.
An open of $1,000, a high of 1,120 and a close of 1,020 leaves a $100 upper wick.
