Up and down candles

The colour showing whether the period rose or fell

In detail

The body of a candle spans the open and the close. Closing above the open makes an up candle, closing below makes a down candle. Which colour means which differs by country and by tool. A run of long up candles marks strong buying; long down candles read the other way.

Example

Opening at $1,000 and closing at 1,050 is an up candle; closing at 950 is a down candle.

Differences by country

Japan — Japanese charts usually draw up candles white or red and down candles black or blue.

South Korea — Korean brokerage screens usually show up candles in red and down candles in blue.
