The yen losing value, and the yen gaining value
A weak yen means the yen has lost value; a strong yen means it has gained. Moving from 150 to 160 yen per dollar is a weaker yen, because more yen are needed to buy the same dollar. A weak yen lifts the profits of Japanese exporters while making Japan's imported materials and travel abroad from Japan dearer. The confusing part is that the larger number means the weaker yen.
150 to 160 yen per dollar is a weaker yen; 150 to 140 is a stronger one.
