Voting right

The right to vote for or against at a shareholder meeting

In detail

The right to vote at the meeting where the company's important decisions are made, in proportion to the shares you hold, so more shares means more say. Some classes of share carry no vote at all.

Example

Holding 5,001 of 10,000 shares gives one holder a majority on its own.

Differences by country

Japan — In Japan votes are counted per trading unit, and holdings below a unit carry none.

South Korea — Korean company law gives one vote per share, and treasury shares held by the company carry none (Commercial Act, Article 369).
