Volume

How many shares actually changed hands

In detail

Volume counts the shares traded over a period. It measures attention: when a price moves on rising volume, many participants were involved. When volume is very thin, you may find no buyer at all on the day you want to sell.

Example

The same 10,000-share order lands very differently in a stock trading 500,000 shares a day than in one trading 5,000.
