Safe haven currency

A currency bought when uncertainty rises

In detail

During wars or financial crises money tends to move into a small set of currencies seen as refuges. Current account surpluses, large net foreign assets and political stability are the usual reasons given. The pattern is not reliable, and a wide interest gap can push the same currency the other way.

Example

In one crisis the yen rose more than 10% against the dollar within a single month.
