Odd lot

Buying fewer shares than one trading unit

In detail

Odd-lot trading lets you buy fewer shares than the standard unit, sometimes just one. That puts expensive names within reach of a small budget. Dividends come in proportion to the shares held, but there is usually no vote and often no shareholder perk. Brokers restrict these orders in other ways too, such as not letting you set a price.

Example

Where one unit of 100 shares costs ¥300,000, a single share can be bought for ¥3,000.
