Sales charge (no-load)

A one-off fee paid when you buy a fund

In detail

The sales charge goes to the distributor when you buy. Funds without one are called no-load. It cuts your principal the moment you buy, so between two identical funds the cheaper one wins. It is separate from the annual management fee, and only looking at both together shows the real cost.

Example

Investing $1,000,000 with a 3% charge puts 970,000 to work.
