Margin balances

Borrowed positions that have not yet been closed

In detail

Shares bought on margin and not yet repaid are the long balance; shares sold short and not yet bought back are the short balance. Longs are future selling pressure and shorts are future buying pressure. The figures are published at regular intervals.

Example

A million long against 200,000 short is a ratio of 5.0.

Differences by country

Japan — In Japan the exchange publishes them once a week.

South Korea — In Korea the Korea Financial Investment Association compiles brokers' margin credit balances and publishes the market-wide total every day.
