Korea's main index, covering its main board by market cap
KOSPI combines every common share listed on the Korea Exchange's main board, weighted by market capitalization. It takes the market value on 4 January 1980 as 100 and shows how many times larger today's market value is. The biggest companies move it the most, so a handful of names can shape how the whole market looks. It is the figure quoted most often when people talk about Korean stocks.
If total market value is 25 times what it was on the base date, KOSPI reads 100 × 25 = 2,500.
