Institutional investor

An organisation investing large pooled sums

In detail

Institutional investors are pension funds, insurers and fund managers that invest money pooled from many people. Because a single order is large, it moves the price in thinly traded names. They also attend earnings briefings directly and vote their shares, so both their information and their involvement differ from an individual's.

Example

A single order can run to hundreds of thousands of shares, which moves a stock trading 100,000 a day.
