Trading on important information before it is public
Insider trading means buying or selling shares while holding important company information that has not been announced: earnings figures, a merger, a serious accident. It covers not only officers and staff but family or business partners who heard it, and the law prohibits it. The rule is to trade only once the information is public and anyone could know it.
Trading on figures learned inside the company 1 day before results is treated as pre-disclosure dealing.
