The fee paid to have a transfer written into the chain
A gas fee is what you pay to have a transfer or trade recorded on the blockchain. It rises when the network is busy, so the same transfer costs different amounts at different times. Set the fee too low and your transaction waits behind others, sometimes for a long time. Sending small amounts often makes the fee a large share of what you move.
At busy times a transfer fee of $500 can climb to $2,000.
