Dow theory

Reading trend from how highs and lows line up

In detail

Higher highs and higher lows mean an uptrend; lower highs and lower lows mean a downtrend. The basic idea is that a trend keeps going until a clear signal says it has turned. Much of chart reading is built on this way of looking at the sequence.

Example

Highs of $1,000 then $1,100 with lows of $900 then $950 read as an uptrend.
