Death cross

A short average crossing down through a long one

In detail

A death cross is the mirror image of a golden cross: the shorter moving average falls through the longer one from above. It marks the recent average price dropping below the longer-term average and is described as a sign of weakening. Like its counterpart, it is built from past prices, so it lags the move.

Example

The 25-day falling from $1,050 to $990 while the 75-day sits at $1,000 crosses below โ€” a death cross.
