The consensus is the average forecast published by brokerage analysts. It stands in for what the market already expects, so results above it are a beat and below it a miss. This is why a good set of numbers can still push a share price down: the comparison is not last year, it is the consensus.
If 5 analysts average an EPS of $120, that figure is the consensus.
