Breakout

Pushing through a level that had been holding

In detail

The price finally clears a high or a low that had turned it back several times, and often starts moving in that new direction. A break without volume behind it frequently falls back inside the old range, which is why it is called a false one.

Example

A stock stopped three times at $1,050 that prints $1,060 has broken out.
