Country risk

Risk that comes from the country rather than the issuer

In detail

Political upheaval, deteriorating public finances or a currency collapse can hit an asset regardless of who issued it. It shows up not only as a government failing to repay but as blocked transfers or currency that cannot be exchanged. Agencies rate countries too, and that rating often caps the ratings of companies based there.

Example

In a country facing fiscal doubts, the ten-year yield has jumped from 2% to 7% within six months.
