A bond issued by a local or regional government
Local authorities issue these to fund schools, roads and similar projects. The issuer is smaller than the national government, so the yield is usually a little higher, but central support arrangements make them look safer than corporate debt. Some are sold to individuals in small denominations.
On the same ten-year term, a 1.0% government yield might sit alongside a municipal yield near 1.1%.
