Loss carryforward

Carrying an unused loss into later years

In detail

A loss too large for this year's gains can be set against gains in later years. Whether it can be carried, and for how many years, differs by country, and it generally has to be filed every year from the one in which the loss arose.

Example

Carry a $10,000 loss forward and an $8,000 gain the next year is taxed as nothing.

Differences by country

Japan — In Japan a share loss can be carried for up to three years if you keep filing.

South Korea — In Korea an unused share loss cannot be carried forward to later years (as of 2026). The financial investment income tax, which would have allowed it, was abolished by a December 2024 amendment before it took effect.
