Halving

The point where newly issued supply is cut in half

In detail

A halving is the moment when the mining reward, the newly issued supply, is cut in half. In Bitcoin it arrives roughly every four years, so supply grows more slowly in steps. Combined with the fixed cap, it means new issuance thins out over time. Prices have moved sharply around past halvings.

Example

Bitcoin's reward fell from 50 coins to 25, and then to 12.5, halving each time.
