Foreign stocks

Shares listed on an exchange in another country

In detail

Foreign stocks are shares listed on overseas exchanges. A broker may let you pay in your own currency, but the price is set in the local one, so the exchange rate mixes into your result. Trading hours fall outside your day and dividends are taxed locally first, both unlike domestic shares. Commissions also tend to be higher.

Example

A 5% rise in the local price is cancelled out if your own currency strengthens by 5%.
