Floating exchange rate

A rate set day to day by supply and demand

In detail

No official level is declared; the price moves as buyers and sellers meet. Differences in rates and growth show up quickly, which leaves monetary policy free to follow domestic conditions. The cost is that trade margins are harder to predict, so companies often hedge the swings.

Example

A move from 110 to 150 yen per dollar within one year spans nearly 40 yen.
