Registered crypto exchange

A crypto company licensed by the regulator

In detail

A crypto exchange operator is a company that handles crypto trading after registering with, or reporting to, the state. Many systems require customer assets to be kept apart from the firm's own and mostly held offline. Using an unregistered overseas venue means neither that protection nor a domestic channel to complain to. Regulators publish the list of registered firms.

Example

Check the regulator's list of registered firms 1 time before signing up.

Differences by country

Japan — In Japan registration with the Financial Services Agency is mandatory, and the agency publishes the list.

South Korea — In Korea operators must report to the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit. Since 19 July 2024 they must also keep customer cash at a bank and hold at least 80% of customer crypto offline (as of 2026).
